German Couple Thrives In Italian Village Despite Language Barrier

A German couple in their 30s talks about moving to Sant’Elia a Pianisi, a lively village in southern Italy after purchasing a farmhouse for 29,000 euros.

Despite fears of isolation and the town falling into disrepair, they discovered a community of older US Americans, young adults, and a mix of Italian, English, and German speakers.

The couple do not speak fluent Italian, so they use a combination of their broken Italian, English and German to communicate.

The couple has easily integrated into the new community with a weekly outdoor market to socialize and multiple little grocery stores etc.

My Take…

The ability to communicate is one of the most important tools when moving and living in a foreign destination. A little goes a long way!
