New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, and Australia have highly desirable qualities for US retirees. However, restrictive residency policies often make them unrealistic options.
Many “best of” lists feature these countries without addressing residency challenges. To obtain residency in many of these nations, retirees usually need considerable wealth or specific skill sets.
Advisably, US retirees should look for more welcoming countries like Panama, Belize, and Costa Rica, or those offering “independent means” visas, like Portugal, Spain, and Greece.
Consulting “best of” lists with practical information about immigration can also significantly aid decision making.
My Take…
Many of these lists are data driven, without any actual human input and realities.
To be honest, I ignore most of them.
The majority of new retirees I see are budgeting between US$1500-3000 monthly, so they are primarily focusing on Asia and South America. Plus long term visas have been traditionally easier to obtain in these regions.
