Many American retirees dream of warm weather and a lower cost of living, and Mexico remains a top choice. A retired couple who left the U.S. for Cuenca, Ecuador, spent two years exploring alternative destinations, including Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
They were surprised by Cancún’s vibrant downtown life beyond its famed hotel zone, while Playa del Carmen offered seamless access to beaches and American conveniences. However, the region’s heat wasn’t a perfect fit.
Their conclusion? While Mexico has plenty to offer retirees, Cuenca remains their preferred home, at least for now.

I agree 100%! Cuenca is a gem of a city for retirement and is easily in my current Top 5 destinations.
