Madeira’s got that rare magic, a European island that feels more like Hawaii or Bali.
Floating in the Atlantic closer to Africa than Lisbon, its jagged peaks, lush trails, and banana plants wow visitors year-round.
Funchal’s old-world charm seals the deal. Add in affordable living, award-winning beaches, and a laid-back vibe, and it’s no wonder expats are flocking here.
Just ask Alan Featherstone, who swapped the U.K. for a sunny life by the sea decades ago.
His advice? “Live like a local, spend like a local… and enjoy the good life while you still can.” Sounds like paradise found.
My Take…
Not on my list to be honest, but would like to pay a visit in the future.
I think older couples would love Madeira from what people tell me.
