Retired Teacher Finds Cheap Life in Guatemala

Retired Teacher Finds Affordable Life In Guatemala

Ron Podmore, 58, a retired high school teacher from Washington, has traded his classroom for a condo in Guatemala City. After 32 years of teaching, he took early retirement in 2023, choosing to stretch his pension by splitting his time between Guatemala and the U.S.

Over the last decade, he invested carefully, paid off his Guatemalan condo, and began the residency process.

He says living there is affordable, especially healthcare, which costs him about $315 a month with no copays.

For now, heโ€™s content dividing his time between Federal Way and Guatemala, settling comfortably into his new chapter of life.
