Greece Named World’s Top Retirement Destination

Greece Named World’s Top Retirement Destination For 2026

Greece has claimed the top spot as the world’s best retirement destination for 2026, according to International Living’s latest Annual Global Retirement Index. It’s the first time the Mediterranean nation has ranked number one in the index’s 35-year history. The report places Greece ahead of Panama, Costa Rica, and Portugal.

International Living’s executive editor Jennifer Stevens said Greece stood out for its affordability, accessible residency options, and vibrant lifestyle. The country’s appeal lies in its natural beauty, culture, and the “siga siga” way of life, an easygoing rhythm that invites retirees to slow down and enjoy each day.

The index’s criteria included health care, climate, cost of living, and housing. Correspondent Leena Horner, who moved from Colorado to Corfu, reported that she and her husband live comfortably on about €3,000 a month. She noted that private health care is affordable and reliable, with coverage costing far less than in the U.S.

For those seeking to settle down, Greece offers an accessible “golden visa” program and a financially independent person visa for retirees. With its island scenery, strong expat community, and laid-back lifestyle, Greece is shaping up as the dream destination for retirees looking to start fresh under the sun.

My Take…

You gotta love the best of lists. Greece???

Apparently, International Living loves Greece’s affordability, easy residency hoops, and that “siga siga” vibe. Translation, pass me the ouzo bottle I got a “best list” to finish. LOL!
