Sunny Life Along Panama’s Arco Seco Coast

Sunny Life Along Panama’s Arco Seco Coast

Reporter Roberto R. Hernandez reflects on daily life along the sunlit stretch between Punta Chame and Río Hato, a region locals call the “arco seco”. It’s one of Panama’s driest areas, with less than 55 inches of rain a year, perfect for beach-goers and outdoor living.

Each beach has its own charm. Punta Chame draws kite-surfers, Playa Serena invites walkers, Playa Teta has Caribbean flair, Río Mar tempts surfers, and Farallón keeps things easy with clean facilities and white sand. At the heart of it all sits Coronado, about 55 miles from Panama City. The drive runs roughly an hour and a half, and buses make the trip daily.

Hernandez notes that rental prices range from $400 to $1,500 a month, depending on style and location. He and his wife pay just under $1,100 with utilities, enjoying mountain and ocean views. Groceries, markets, and restaurants, including those serving classic Panamanian fare, are close by.

Coronado offers clinics, shops, veterinarians, pharmacies, and even a hospital branch. A routine dental cleaning might cost $40, and local clinics charge as little as $10 a visit. Life here runs at a pleasant pace, beaches, sunsets, fresh food, and friendly neighbors define Panama’s dry arch.

My Take…

This all sounds very idyllic. But…. Just remember, when you get up there in age, health becomes a priority and access to medical facilities. Sometimes a destination can sound perfect, but may just be your worst nightmare if things go bad…. health wise.

Then again… you only live once 🙂
