Costa Rica’s Lifestyle Boom Attracts New Wave Of Expats

Interest in Costa Rica is exploding, and IL’s Costa Rica correspondent, Bekah Bottone, lays out the reasons behind the trend. Residency applications are reportedly up 600%, with newcomers drawn to the country’s laid‑back lifestyle, affordability, and strong healthcare system. Bekah notes that what was once considered a haven for retirees is now seeing younger families and remote professionals making the move too.

People are attracted by a combination of natural beauty, accessible healthcare, and a slower pace of life. Bekah points out that while the cost of living varies across the country, it’s often less than in North America, especially outside San José. Popular spots include coastal regions and smaller towns offering strong expat communities and good infrastructure.

At the same time, Bekah reminds would‑be residents to understand the process, as local bureaucracy and certain imported goods can be more expensive. Still, she says the benefits far outweigh the challenges for most people she interviews.

My Take…

Costa Rica’s the new “it” address, like Bali before everyone ruined Bali. IL’s Bekah Bottone says residency apps have jumped 600%. People chasing sunshine, sanity, and public healthcare that doesn’t ask for your firstborn. Used to be a retiree’s hammock, now it’s tech freelancers and families trading rush hour for toucans. Life’s cheaper than North America (unless you insist on importing oat milk). Beaches, coffee towns, Wi-Fi that mostly works, check, check, check. Sure, bureaucracy’s a beast, but when paradise comes with paperwork, you suck it up. Curious? There’s a conference in July. Pack bug spray.
