The latest UK Retirement Destinations Attractiveness Report 2026 has shed new light on where Brits are choosing to spend their golden years abroad. Compiled by Hoxton Wealth in collaboration with University of Warwick researchers, the study ranked countries based on visa access, tax benefits, healthcare, stability, and quality of life.
Cyprus and Ireland share the top spot this year. Cyprus scored highly for its flexible pension tax regime, English-friendly environment, and more than 3,300 hours of sunshine annually. Ireland, meanwhile, remains a straightforward option for UK retirees thanks to the Common Travel Area, allowing Britons to live and work there visa-free.
Close behind are Malta, Portugal, and Panama. Malta and Portugal continue to shine for their healthcare systems and year-round pleasant weather, while Panama appeals to cost-conscious retirees with its territorial tax system and generous “Pensionado” benefits.
Other high performers include Mauritius, Spain, and Uruguay, each offering a blend of affordability, safety, and lifestyle perks. Hoxton Wealth’s CEO, Chris Ball, noted that retirement planning abroad has evolved into a strategic financial decision, requiring a balance between lifestyle dreams and long-term fiscal realities.
For sunseekers, planners, and dreamers alike, 2026’s ranking offers a clear view of where life after work may feel most rewarding.
My Take…
The 2026 UK Retirement Destinations Attractiveness Report (yes, that mouthful) says Cyprus and Ireland are tied for top spot. Cyprus wins on tax breaks, sunshine, and plenty of people who speak English. Ireland’s charm? You can move there without a visa, cheers to the Common Travel Area. Nipping at their heels: Malta, Portugal, and Panama. Think healthcare, warmth, and cheap rum. Mauritius, Spain, and Uruguay (what???) round out the pack, affordable, safe, and easy on the eye. Apparently, retirement’s less about slippers now, more about spreadsheets and SPF 50. Try to act surprised.
