After her divorce began just before global lockdowns, Beth found herself rethinking everything. Living outside New York City, she first searched for a new home in the United States. As the months passed, her plans grew bigger. She had always dreamed of moving abroad, and with her youngest child heading to university, she decided it was time.
Beth arrived in Spain on a three month visa to test the waters. She chose Tarragona, a coastal city in Catalonia with Roman ruins, seaside views, and a population just over 200000. Four years later, she is still there and still in love with the decision.
She says adapting to a new culture has been key. Life feels like an ongoing adventure, and the strong local community has made it easy to build friendships with both expats and locals.
Practical matters helped seal the deal. Beth bought a spacious home near the sea and enjoys a lower cost of living. Private health insurance costs her about 1500 euros per year and covers medical, dental, and vision care. She lives in Spain on a non lucrative visa and plans to apply for permanent residency next year.
For Beth, Tarragona feels like home.
My Take…
Beth did what the rest of us threatened to do in 2020. Reinvent everything. With her youngest off to university, she boarded a plane to Spain instead. Eat Pray Love, but with better WiFi.
