An American retiree who once felt restless back home has now spent nine years living full time in Thailand and says he has no intention of returning to the United States. Marty Pollard first visited Thailand after retirement in search of something different. One trip turned into several, and eventually into a permanent move.
He shares that daily life in Thailand offers comfort and simplicity at a cost that makes retirement feel secure. Modern apartments with pools and gyms can start around 450 dollars per month. Local food is affordable and widely available. Healthcare, he says, impressed him from the start, with efficient service and reasonable prices. He maintains private health insurance and finds the system easy to navigate.
Visa requirements for retirees include meeting income or savings thresholds, and Marty explains that planning ahead made the process manageable. Beyond finances, he credits the culture, community, and slower pace of life for keeping him there.
For Marty, retiring abroad opened the door to adventure, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose. Thailand, he says, feels like home.
My Take…
Marty Pollard retired, got bored, and instead of buying a beige recliner he bought a one way ticket to Thailand. Nine years later, he is still there and not exactly Googling flights back to the States. What started as a curiosity trip turned into the main storyline. He says life runs smoother there. Modern apartments with pools and gyms from about 450 dollars a month. Street food that costs less than your old Starbucks habit. Healthcare that is efficient, affordable, and surprisingly easy to navigate with private insurance.Sure, there are visa income rules, but he planned ahead. Add warm culture and a slower pace, and honestly, why leave?
