American Retirees Moving Abroad For Affordable Living

Dorsie and Dan Schmitz had spent 37 years building a life in rural Michigan, complete with a big house on 31 acres in Blanchard. As retirement neared, they grew uneasy about their finances and the national mood. They wanted a lifestyle that felt affordable and aligned with their values. After looking at Portugal, Greece, France and Thailand, they landed on Albania. In April, they moved to Vlorë, a seaside city on the Adriatic, where they rent a three bedroom apartment near the Lungomare Promenade for 1100 dollars a month.

Their leap reflects a wider movement. At the end of 2024, more than 712000 Americans were receiving Social Security abroad, a rise of 20 percent over 13 years. Surveys show many more are exploring the idea.

Forbes recently highlighted 96 retirement spots across 24 countries, weighing living costs, healthcare, taxes, climate risk and residency rules. Places like Portugal, Panama, Mexico and Malaysia draw attention for lower housing and medical bills. Some nations even offer digital nomad visas that can open doors to longer stays.

For the Schmitzes, the decision was simple. They sold nearly everything and embraced the change. Their children and grandchildren can visit.

My Take…

After 37 years in rural Michigan with 31 acres and a big house to mow, Dorsie and Dan Schmitz looked at retirement and thought, is this it? Between jittery finances and the national mood feeling like a bad cable news loop, they wanted out. Portugal, Greece, France, Thailand all flirted. Albania sealed it. In April they landed in Vlorë (Albania), renting a three bedroom place near the Lungomare for US$1100. Adriatic views beat snow shovels.
