Brits Seek Global Havens For Affordable Retirement

Brits dreaming of sunnier retirement lifestyles are eyeing new destinations beyond Spain and Portugal. Reports show Panama, Costa Rica, Thailand, Malta, and Ireland trending among soon-to-be retirees searching for cheaper and more relaxed ways of life.

According to 1st Move International’s managing director Mike Harvey, inquiries to Panama alone have jumped 47% this year, driven by its affordable Pensionado visa and lower monthly living costs — many retirees live comfortably on as little as £1,200. Costa Rica’s jungle-lined coasts and low healthcare costs make it another top pick, while Malta’s English-speaking environment and Mediterranean climate continue to draw interest from those seeking a European base.

Thailand remains a favourite for its budget-friendly rent and beaches, and Ireland’s familiarity appeals to those wanting to stay close to home without language barriers or complicated visas.

Experts remind would-be expats to check tax rules and state pension policies before committing. Some countries freeze UK pension increases or may tax lump-sum withdrawals differently. Still, for many, the promise of palm trees, a slower pace, and substantial monthly savings makes the move appealing.

From the Caribbean to Cork, it seems the great British retirement is going global.

My Take…

Apparently, the great British retirement fantasy has outgrown Spain’s sangria and Portugal’s pastéis. Now it’s all “Pura Vida” in Costa Rica or sipping cheap rum in Panama, where interest is reportedly up 47%. Blame the low rent, chill visas, and the fact you can live well on about £1,200 a month. Not bad for folks swapping drizzle for daylight. Thailand still wins for beaches on a budget, Malta offers Mediterranean manners in English, and Ireland’s handy if you fancy Guinness over coconuts. Sure, check your taxes and frozen pensions first. But honestly? Palm trees beat potholes any day.
