Budget Travel YouTuber Shares Couples Philippines Living Costs

A YouTuber known for budget travel content, Dan from the channel Vagabond Awake, sat down with a guest named Jeremy to talk about dirt cheap living in the Philippines. Jeremy, originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, says he and his wife pay just 4,000 pesos a month for a one bedroom apartment in Pampanga, about two hours north of Manila. At current exchange rates, that comes out to around $65. Electricity runs another 3,000 to 4,000 pesos, mostly from running the air conditioner, and internet costs roughly 1,600 pesos.

Jeremy, who married his Filipina wife in December after she came to the US on a fiance visa, says the pair are currently stuck stateside while waiting on her green card. He’s made nine trips to the Philippines over the years and also has traveled through Cambodia, South Korea and Taiwan.

He mentioned his wife’s old grocery budget back home, around 3,000 pesos a week for herself and her teenage daughter, with little eating out beyond the occasional Jollibee run. Jeremy joked that his own food budget runs higher since he still craves American fast food, once driving four and a half hours to Dallas just to get Jollibee.

My Take…

Dirt cheap, apparently, except for Jeremy’s four and a half hour Jollibee pilgrimage. Priorities, right? Anyway: a YouTuber sat down with an Oklahoma guy whose Filipina wife lives in Pampanga for about $65 rent, cheap utilities, and grocery runs that make American bills look like a scam.
