Dumaguete City takes another spotlight moment as the Department of Tourism announces its latest recognition as one of Asia’s most budget-friendly destinations for retirees. The acknowledgment comes from Investopedia, which cited Dumaguete’s affordability, lively university atmosphere, and improving healthcare services.
Officials say the honor underscores the city’s steady rise as a favorite among foreign retirees, powered by strong local partnerships between government and private sectors. The Philippine Retirement Authority continues to push programs for long-stay visitors, including the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa, which now counts more than 83,000 holders nationwide.
Known as the “City of Gentle People,” Dumaguete offers expats relaxed coastal living, vibrant cafés, cultural festivities, and easy access to hospitals and schools. The DoT notes that this recognition aligns with the national effort to position the Philippines as a premier retirement hub in Asia.
Aside from Dumaguete, other Asian destinations listed include Penang in Malaysia, Hoi An in Vietnam, and Chiang Rai in Thailand. The Philippines also recently received the title of Asia’s Best Retirement Destination at the 11th TripZilla Excellence Awards, solidifying its status as an inviting home for retirees across the region.

Dumaguete just bagged another feather for its laid-back, seaside hat, Investopedia calls it one of Asia’s most budget-friendly spots to retire. Yep, the “City of Gentle People” now doubles as the “City of Cheap and Cheerful Hideaways.”
