Greece has officially claimed the top spot on International Living’s 2026 Global Retirement Index, marking its debut as the world’s best country to live. The report, now in its 35th year, draws insight from expats across the globe, weighing factors like cost of living, healthcare, climate and residency options.
Jennifer Stevens, International Living’s executive editor, pointed out that Greece’s moment has arrived, with stable growth, accessible healthcare and relatively low daily costs. Expats reportedly live well on $2,500 to $3,200 a month, with beachside rents starting around $600.
Conditions stateside are motivating Americans to look abroad. Two-thirds of respondents said rising living costs and political fatigue make them more likely to relocate. Greece’s flexible visa programs and balance of modern infrastructure and value seem to hit the sweet spot.
Europe continues to dominate the list: Portugal, Italy, France and Spain all made the top ten. Rounding out the list are Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, Thailand and Malaysia, each praised for healthcare quality, affordability and lifestyle perks.
Stevens summed it up simply: for those eyeing a new start, Greece’s mix of charm, stability and value makes it the year’s most compelling choice for life overseas.
My Take…
Sorry, don’t buy it 🙂
I’m not hating on Greece, but I just don’t see this as the top retirement destination in 2026.
How about Portugal, Italy, France, Spain, the usual suspects. Add Panama, Costa Rica, Thailand etc?
