The Lake Chapala area, anchored by the towns of Chapala, Ajijic and Jocotepec, continues to attract residents from around the world. Located about an hour south of Guadalajara, this region is famous for its temperate climate, colonial architecture and strong expat community. Many foreigners, particularly retirees from the United States and Canada, have settled here for the easy lifestyle, social scene and convenient access to Guadalajara’s international airport.
Ajijic, known for its cobblestone streets and colorful murals, is the area’s focal point. The Lake Chapala Society serves as a hub for cultural, educational and volunteer activities. Just east, Chapala draws weekend visitors from Guadalajara to its pier and lakeside cafés, while Jocotepec, farther west, offers more traditional Mexican charm and lower property costs.
Life here moves at a relaxed pace. The lakeside towns enjoy mild temperatures year-round, with summer highs around 85°F and cool, dry winters. Housing ranges from simple casitas to elegant hillside villas, and quality medical care, shopping and dining are readily available. For those seeking a community-oriented lifestyle that blends Mexican flavor with familiar comforts, the Lake Chapala region stands out as one of Mexico’s most established retiree destinations.
My Take…
Lake Chapala area sounds just like my type of spot. The only downside for many, is you often need decent Spanish skills to assimilate. Go download that Duolingo app and book your ticket to the Lake Chapala area 🙂
