A new global ranking suggests the best places to retire come down to cost, climate and the ability to stay long term. The inaugural RUMAVI Global Relocation Index, released in July by a Singapore advisory firm, reviewed 192 countries using 24 measures, with a special focus on retirees.
Malaysia took the top spot with a score of 75.8. Researchers pointed to low living costs, strong healthcare value and the MM2H long stay visa as key reasons. The country scored 97.8 for affordability and 85.0 for foreign income tax treatment. Panama and Portugal followed closely, with Thailand and Costa Rica rounding out the top five. St. Kitts and Nevis ranked sixth, while Antigua and Barbuda placed tenth.
Alexander Linton, founder of RUMAVI, said the results show retirees prioritize access and comfort over national wealth. The United States ranked 152nd for retirees with a score of 55.2, weighed down by healthcare costs and worldwide taxation. Germany, the United Kingdom and France also placed outside the top tier.
At the bottom of the list was Afghanistan at 192. The findings highlight how policy, affordability and climate shape retirement choices worldwide.
My Take…
Apparently the secret to a blissful retirement is not winning the lottery. It is snagging decent weather, affordable noodles and a visa that does not treat you like an overstaying houseguest.
