Mexico’s Colonial Towns Offer Cheap Living Beyond Beaches

Beaches aren’t for everybody. Plenty of full time expats in Mexico would rather sip coffee under colonial arches than lie on sand, and the country delivers with its old Spanish era towns.

Ajijic sits at 5,000 feet on Lake Chapala, with cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and a surprising number of galleries and restaurants for its size. Rentals start around $500 monthly, with a couple living well on about $2,200.

Guanajuato offers similar beauty but with far fewer foreigners, feeling more distinctly Mexican. Basic rentals run under $400, though a comfortable lifestyle for a couple lands closer to $2,500 a month.

Álamos, home to roughly 25,000 people, stands apart for how well its historic center has been preserved. It draws genuine artists, writers, and musicians, along with a notable number of women living there solo. It’s a strong option for smaller town living outside places like San Miguel or Oaxaca. Rentals start near $500, with $2,500 covering a couple’s monthly costs comfortably.

Three towns, three different vibes, all offering colonial charm without coastal prices.

My Take…

Beaches, meh. Some expats want cobblestones, not sunburn. Ajijic delivers, altitude included, rent from $500, couple living large on $2,200. Guanajuato's the moodier cousin, fewer gringos, more Mexico, $400 basics, $2,500 comfort. Álamos, 25,000 souls, artsy, solo women thriving, San Miguel's quieter sibling, $500 to $2,500. Colonial charm, zero beach tax. Not bad, honestly.
