Generation X, The Forgotten Generation

Retiring abroad news from Retirement Utopia

Gen X often feels like the middle child, stuck between the Boomers and Millennials.

Now there’s this eye-opening report that’s trying to fix this by checking out how ready Gen X is for retirement. Spoiler: It doesn’t look great.

They were the first to dive into the world of 401(k)s instead of those old-school pension plans. The sad part? Half of them have only saved a few grand for retirement, with an average Gen X household having just about $40k saved up.

The rich Gen Xers have the most saved, while Black and Hispanic folks lag behind their white counterparts.

This info-packed report is from the National Institute on Retirement Security. They’ve looked at a ton of stats – who’s got retirement plans at work, how many people actually use them, and loads more. They even break it down by race, gender, and whether you’re hitched or not.

Who’s Gen X? Those born between 1965 and 1980, making up almost 20% of the US.

My Take…

I’m part of the GenX crowd, so this report is of particular interest to me.

It’s an in-depth downloadable report (PDF). Very well produced and packed with a ton of data. It offers great insights into what many in the GenX bracket are facing as they near retirement.
