Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico remain leading retirement destinations for 2026, securing second, third and fifth place on a widely followed global index. The annual ranking reviews cost of living, healthcare, climate, visas and overall quality of life for foreign retirees.
Panama stands out for its dollar based economy and modern healthcare system. Its Pensionado visa grants residency to retirees with a lifetime pension of about one thousand dollars a month, along with discounts on services and travel. Costa Rica draws strong interest for its mild climate, stable democracy and respected public healthcare network. Mexico continues to attract retirees with its proximity to the United States, large expat communities and affordable private medical care.
Costs remain a major incentive. A couple can live comfortably in many areas on about one thousand eight hundred to three thousand dollars per month. Panama and Costa Rica tax only local income, which appeals to retirees living on foreign pensions.
Greece ranked first this year, marking a shift in the index. Even so, Latin America holds a firm presence in the global top tier, offering retirees a range of accessible and affordable options.
My Take…
Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico are basically the retirement prom court again for 2026, landing second, third and fifth on that globe trotting index everyone quotes. Couples living well on eighteen hundred to three thousand a month? Not bad. Greece took first, sure. But Latin America is still the cool kid at this party.
