Puerto Vallarta Shines As Mexico’s Coastal Gem

Puerto Vallarta has long attracted attention for its beaches, relaxed pace, and easy international connections. The coastal city, set on Mexico’s Pacific side, counts roughly 220,000 residents in the broader area and sits just 15 feet above sea level. Locals and expats alike call it “PV,” a nod to its friendly, informal atmosphere.

Tourism drives much of the economy, but agriculture, light manufacturing, and a developing e-commerce sector add variety. Warm weather, averaging 86°F year-round, keeps outdoor life active, though the rainy season from May through October brings tropical storms. Healthcare is strong, with private facilities matching international standards.

Real estate has grown rapidly over the past two decades, ranging from Old Town’s cobblestone charm to modern condos in Nuevo Vallarta and high-end homes in Punta de Mita. Costs remain moderate compared to major North American cities, and foreign buyers continue to see long-term opportunity.

Accessibility by air, road, and sea keeps Puerto Vallarta well connected. For retirees, digital workers, or lifestyle seekers, the town’s mix of affordability, infrastructure, and natural beauty makes it one of Mexico’s most notable coastal communities. It’s the kind of place people visit once, and often decide to stay.

My Take…

Puerto Vallarta, or “PV,” if you’re in the club. Sun, sand, margaritas, you know the drill. I visited a few years ago, great spot in my opinion.

Very expat/retiree orientated, which can be good or bad, depending on what you are looking for.
