Retired Australian Finds Her Forever Home In Penang

Lisa Williams, 65, has settled into a relaxed rhythm in Penang, Malaysia, a place that has felt familiar for most of her life. She first arrived in 1968, when her father’s posting with the Australian Air Force brought the family there. Decades later, the tropical island still feels like home.

After following her father’s path into the Air Force and spending years between Malaysia and Australia, she retired in 2019 and finally made the move back under the Malaysia My Second Home visa. When the pandemic delayed plans, she briefly returned to work in Western Australia before retiring again for good in 2023. Now, she says life in Penang feels like “a permanent holiday.”

Her days revolve around coffee meetups, card games, dim sum outings, and volunteer projects. The expat network keeps her social calendar packed, and she rarely cooks, preferring the endless food stalls nearby. Living on about 3,000 ringgit a month, she describes her lifestyle as comfortable and fulfilling.

Her husband still works in Perth but visits often. With friends, food, and sunshine on her side, Lisa plans to stay in Penang as long as she can, content in the place that first captured her heart as a child.

My Take…

Sounds like a great life to me, well done Lisa!

Now it’s lattes, card games, dumplings. No cooking, no worries. Three grand ringgit buys comfort, community, and weather that slaps Perth right off the map.
