Retired Couple Rediscovers Joy Of Slow Travel In Ireland

Retired couple Kelly and Nigel Benthall ditched slow travel for a five-week whirlwind through the UK and Ireland, seven stops, 2,000+ miles, countless pints, and zero time to breathe. “It felt like a thrilling affair,” Kelly says, “but totally unsustainable.”

The pace echoed the stress they’d left behind in retirement. By the time they landed in quiet Killaloe, Ireland, burnout had set in hard.

Now, they’re back to their slow-travel roots: one Airbnb, one grocery run, no checkouts to plan. “Fast travel showed us what we could cram in,” Kelly reflects. “Slow travel reminds us why we left the rush behind.”

My Take…

I’m a huge fan of Southern Ireland for motorcycle touring, not so much for retiring.

No doubt about it, it’s stunningly beautiful, nice people, but just not my type of potential retirement destination.
