Retiree Finds Peace And Purpose In Penang

Ward Chartier, a 70-year-old retiree in Penang, Malaysia, has lived a life that spans continents. Born in Wisconsin, his early years were shaped by family moves across the United States before settling into a career in high-tech manufacturing. That job eventually took him abroad to the UK, Denmark, Ireland, Malaysia, and China. After a stint in San Francisco, Ward started rethinking his future.

In 2018, he made the move back to Penang, a place he had grown fond of during his working years there. The switch was seamless. English is widely spoken, the food scene is thriving, and the healthcare left him impressed after a hiking accident led to surgery.

A cancer survivor, Ward now dedicates three days a week volunteering at a cancer hospital, supporting patients and their families. Outside of volunteering, he’s active, two hours of exercise a day, frequent drives around the island, and the occasional flight to visit friends in neighboring countries.

Ward calls Penang his only home now. For him, wealth isn’t measured in possessions but in friendships, and after decades of travel, he’s found peace and purpose where the ocean meets the city.

My Take…

Ward Chartier’s passport has seen more stamps than a ‘90s club kid’s hand on a Friday night.
Now he’s a cancer survivor turned hospital volunteer, cruising the island, working out, living his definition of wealth: friendship, purpose, zero drama.

This is what retirement is all about, living your best life!
