Retirees Find Affordable Freedom In Chiang Mai

Retirees from around the world are settling in Chiang Mai, a laid back city in northern Thailand known for affordability and safety. For Arinjay Jain, the move marked a new chapter. The former IT startup cofounder left Singapore in 2024 at age 50 and rented a one bedroom apartment for about 425 dollars a month. Seasonal smoke from farm fires fills the air for several months each year, yet Jain said he felt energized by the change and quickly embraced his new routine.

Over months of reporting, many retirees shared similar stories. They described a slower pace, low daily costs, and a welcoming community. Street food meals and coffee often cost around 2 dollars and 50 cents. Healthcare is another draw, with private hospitals offering English speaking services at prices far below those in the West.

Thailand offers long stay visas that continue to attract overseas residents. Government data shows nearly one million registered foreign residents in 2025, with Chiang Mai home to about 161000 of them.

Many retirees say the biggest shift is personal freedom. The local idea of sabai sabai, or living in a relaxed way, shapes their days and defines their retirement.

My Take…

Arinjay Jain bailed on Singapore in 2024 at 50, swapped startup grind for a one bedroom at about 425 dollars a month, and called it a glow up. Sure, farm smoke rolls in seasonally. He stayed anyway. Says he feels energized. Go figure. After months of reporting, the chorus is the same. Slower days. Street food and coffee for about 2 dollars and 50 cents. Healthcare that does not require selling a kidney. Private hospitals, English speaking staff, sane prices. Long stay visas help. Nearly one million foreign residents in 2025, about 161000 in Chiang Mai. The real hook is sabai sabai. Relaxed living. Turns out Gen X was right. Work less, live more. Who knew?
