ISpain’s Congress of Deputies passed the Golden Visa Program in December 2024, however, this was swiftly abolished in January of 2025 with the publishing of Organic Law 1/2025.
This decision, effective April 2025, halts wealthy investors outside the EU from purchasing property for golden visas. Despite being initially approved by the Congress of Deputies, the Spanish Senate vetoed the bill. Terminating the Golden Visa Program aims to ensure housing isn’t merely a speculative business but a right.

You can thank the rise of Airbnb for this. I can see this happening in a few other countries in the near future as locals fight for their right to affordable housing.
