San Felipe, nestled on the eastern coast of Baja California, has grown from a small fishing village to a favored spot for retirees and part-time residents. The town sits just two hours south of Mexicali, making it a convenient getaway for Americans seeking sun, affordability, and an easygoing lifestyle. With roughly 15,000 residents, the population swells in winter as “snowbirds” escape colder climates.
The local economy leans on shrimp fishing and tourism, but real estate and small business ventures are on the rise. Land prices, once on a steep climb, have stabilized, offering buyers a chance to invest, particularly in the growing eco-home market. Plots with sea or desert views can still be found at appealing prices, and cost of living remains moderate.
San Felipe’s climate is dry and warm year-round, averaging 78°F. Winters are mild, summers hot but offset by coastal breezes. Infrastructure improvements, new clinics, and expanding retirement communities add to its appeal. While hurricanes occasionally brush nearby coasts, the area remains generally calm.
For many, San Felipe represents the right mix of community, affordability, and connection, close enough to the U.S. for comfort, yet far enough to feel like a fresh start in Baja’s relaxed rhythm.
My Take…
Sounds like a cool spot in Mexico.
San Felipe used to be a sleepy fishing village, the kind of place you’d only find after taking a wrong turn in Mexicali. Now it’s where retirees and part-timers go to reinvent themselves.
Dry, warm, mostly calm, unless Mother Nature forgets her meds.
