The Philippines is standing out in Southeast Asia, but not for the same reasons as its neighbors. While countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam are seeing record numbers of tourists, the Philippines pulled in only about 5.6 million visitors last year. Numbers even slipped from the previous year. Observers note that poor infrastructure, accessibility issues, and limited investment continue to drag down tourism potential, even with the country’s stunning beaches and natural beauty.
Still, there’s another story unfolding. The country is quietly becoming a retirement hotspot for expats. People from around the world are applying for the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa, which starts at about US$15,000. It’s refundable and comes with perks like tax exemptions on foreign income.
Life here, for retirees, is fairly easy on the wallet, especially outside of major cities like Manila or Cebu. Friendly locals, widespread English use, and warm weather add to the appeal.
According to expat network InterNations, the Philippines is among the most welcoming countries for foreign residents in 2025, more for its community spirit and sense of belonging than just its beaches. It seems fewer people may be visiting, but more are staying for good.
My Take…
Everyone else in Southeast Asia is raking in tourists like it’s a holiday sale, while the Philippines is standing in the corner holding a cocktail and wondering what went wrong.
It is and will remain an amazing destination for retiree’s, who cares if the tourist numbers drop, that can sometimes be a good thing 🙂
