Portugal’s Algarve is once again stealing the spotlight as Europe’s top retirement haven for 2026. For nearly a decade, the region reigned as the world’s #1, and though legal and cost shifts have nudged it slightly, it still holds strong as the best in Europe. With over 3,000 hours of sunshine every year and a coastline that stretches more than 150 miles, retirees find Portugal’s southern tip hard to beat.
More than 1.5 million foreigners have already settled in Portugal, including around 100,000 retirees. The Algarve offers a mix of lively coastal cities, resort towns, and peaceful inland villages—all connected by good infrastructure and affordable living. Renting an apartment can start around $950 a month, and a couple can live comfortably on about $3,000.
Healthcare ranks among the world’s best, with English-speaking doctors readily available. Add a strong expat community, friendly locals, and English as a widely spoken second language, and it’s easy to see why people are packing for Faro, Lagos, and Tavira.
From golf to festivals, café mornings to beach sunsets, life in the Algarve keeps things simple and enjoyable, a sun-drenched, safe, and sociable escape tailor-made for easy living.
My Take…
Ah yes, the Algarve, Europe’s unofficial waiting room for blissful retirement. Once the global champ and still Europe’s MVP for 2026, this sunny stretch of Portugal refuses to age out of relevance.
