Da Nang Emerges as Top Retirement Spot For Americans

Da Nang Emerges As Top Retirement Spot For Americans

Vietnam is picking up a new reputation, and it’s not about backpacker hostels or quick beach vacations anymore. Forbes just named the country one of the top overseas retirement spots for Americans, pointing to a cost of living around a quarter of what it is in the US. Da Nang is where that trend is playing out already.

Terry Hawkins came as a tourist and never really left. He says the culture drew him in, but it’s the people who made him stay for good. He’s built friendships, found a routine, and settled in like a local.

Healthcare is another draw. Venkata Bireddy, who splits months of his year in Da Nang, says he can get a same day doctor’s appointment with ease, and many physicians there trained overseas and know international standards well.

Forbes also points to safety and scenery as selling points, naming Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hoi An as favorites among retirees.

Local officials are paying attention. Nguyen Thi Hoai An of Da Nang’s tourism department says the city wants to become a wellness and retirement destination that draws higher spending visitors in the years ahead.

My Take…

Forbes says Vietnam's the new retirement hotspot, ditch the backpacker cliches. Living costs run a quarter of US prices. Da Nang's ground zero. Terry Hawkins showed up as a tourist, never left. People hooked him, not the pho. Venkata Bireddy loves same day doctors trained abroad. Hanoi, Hoi An, HCMC also charm retirees. Officials want your wallet, politely.
