Malaysia has taken the top spot as the best place to retire in 2026, according to the Rumavi Global Relocation Index. Two other Southeast Asian nations also made the top ten list.
Malaysia scored 75.8 out of 100, tying with Panama for first place among 192 countries and territories ranked. Portugal came in third, with Thailand and Costa Rica rounding out the next two spots. The Philippines landed at number eight.
Rumavi, a Singapore based relocation and advisory firm, looked at 24 different measures to build its rankings. These covered finances and taxes, quality of life, health care, safety, stability and how easy it is to settle into a new country and find opportunities there.
Health care quality carried the most weight in the scoring for retirees. After that came how foreign income gets taxed, followed by cost of living, personal safety and how affordable health care actually is once you’re living there.
Malacca’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits among the draws that make Malaysia stand out for people looking to spend their retirement years somewhere new.
