Forbes just dropped its 2026 list of top places for Americans to retire abroad, and Latin America is dominating it. Seven countries made the cut: Argentina, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and Uruguay.
The reasoning is pretty simple. Living costs back home keep climbing, and retirees are tired of watching their savings shrink. So they’re looking south, where the dollar stretches further and daily expenses are often a fraction of what they’d pay in the States.
Mexico and Costa Rica remain popular picks, drawing retirees with established expat communities and easy healthcare access. Panama offers similar perks, plus tax breaks that make it attractive for anyone living on a fixed income.
Belize and Uruguay might be less obvious choices, but they’re gaining attention for stable governments and relatively low costs. Colombia and Argentina round out the list, both offering big city living or slower paced coastal towns depending on what retirees want.
None of this is new, exactly. Americans have been chasing cheaper retirements abroad for years. But with U.S. costs showing no sign of slowing down, Forbes’ list suggests the trend is only picking up speed.
My Take…
Forbes says 2026's retirement hotspots are basically a Latin America highlight reel: Argentina, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Uruguay. Shocking absolutely no one, Americans are fleeing US price tags like it's a bad Blockbuster late fee. Mexico and Costa Rica keep winning on expat communities and healthcare. Panama throws in tax perks. Belize and Uruguay sneak in on stability. Same story, just louder now.
