Dan from Vagabond Awake says if he had to retire on about 1,200 dollars a month and wanted cooler weather, Oaxaca, Mexico would make his shortlist. Sitting at 5,000 feet, Oaxaca stays mild year round, with summer highs around 83 Fahrenheit, no AC needed. The city keeps strong ties to Mexico’s original cultures, visible in its crafts, clothing, and nearby temple ruins like Monte Albán and Mitla.
Rent runs from around 350 dollars outside downtown up to 700 or more in the central area. Add groceries, some restaurant meals, utilities, phone, and laundry, and basic monthly costs land near 771 dollars, closer to 1,031 with extras. Typical expats spend more, often over 2,000, trying to keep their old lifestyle instead of living local.
Dan warns against trusting anyone’s cost estimates, including his own. He says visiting first to test rent, food, and daily habits is the only real way to know. Mexico’s retirement visa now requires proof of a 4,500 dollar monthly pension or 75,000 dollars in savings, pushing some toward work visas through teaching English instead.
My Take…
Most expats blow past 2 grand, Blockbuster brained, clinging to old habits instead of actually living there. Dan’s real advice? Trust no estimate, his included. Go test drive it yourself. Also Mexico’s retirement visa now wants 4,500 monthly or 75K saved, so some folks pivot to teaching English instead. Adulting abroad, everybody’s favorite paperwork nightmare.
