Christine Casady, a 75 year old retiree from Dallas, has spent nearly six years traveling the world with her husband, Rick. What began as extended vacations during her career in leadership development turned into a full time lifestyle after she retired at 70. When their condo was sold and their son moved to New York City, the couple saw an opening for a fresh start.
They sold their belongings, packed essentials into a 27 pound backpack, and left for Europe. Rome and Sicily were first, followed by months in Hawaii and Thailand. Since then, they have lived in places across Southeast Asia, India, Turkey, Egypt, and Argentina, usually staying a few months at a time. They return to the United States once or twice a year to visit family and friends.
Casady says planning each move is like a part time job. The couple spends under 5000 dollars a month and occasionally splurges on experiences like an 8700 dollar African safari. Without a mortgage or car payment, they feel comfortable drawing from savings.
She says the lifestyle keeps her curious and active. For Casady, retirement has become her greatest adventure.
My Take…
Christine Casady is 75, retired, and basically living the Indiana Jones sequel none of us authorized. Six years ago, she and her husband Rick turned “extended vacation” energy into a full time gig.
A few months here, a few months there. Home to the United States once or twice a year for hugs and decent peanut butter. No mortgage. No car payment. Just curiosity on tap. Retirement? Turns out it beats bingo.
