Retiree Rules Out Several Countries For Retirement

A retiree who spent the last five years bouncing between countries says he has now crossed several off his list for good. The 58 year old, planning ahead for life at 65 and 70, says visiting a place and actually settling there are two different things entirely.

Korea, Japan and Taiwan topped his safety rankings, but long term visas proved tough to land, winters got cold and the dollar didn’t stretch far. After two years in Latin America he ran into slow bureaucracy and healthcare that often meant private hospitals and added insurance costs. US territories like Puerto Rico and Guam let him keep Medicare, but he paid US prices for care while dealing with distance and limited options.

Portugal lost its shine once the golden era incentives faded. Panama got five months of his time, based out of Panama City, but it just didn’t click.

He says none of this is a knock on any of these places. He’d visit all of them again. It’s simply about finding where retirement actually fits.

Southeast Asia is next on his radar, with Europe and the Mediterranean still open possibilities. He’s promising more detail on his Southeast Asia plans in an upcoming video.

My Take…

Fifty eight, globe trotting, and apparently allergic to settling down, this guy spent five years test driving retirement like it's a rental car. Korea, Japan, Taiwan? Great vibes, lousy visas, brutal winters. Latin America? Bureaucracy slower than dialup, healthcare that wants your wallet too. Portugal ghosted him once the tax perks dried up (relatable). Panama, Puerto Rico, Guam, all auditioned, none got the callback. Not throwing shade, he says, just Goldilocks energy: too cold, too pricey, too slow, never juuust right. Next stop, Southeast Asia, because apparently porridge is still out there somewhere.
